The Truth About HID Lights

HID Lights in Yamaha R1

Our approach to road safety should never be in the ruins. While stock bulbs and stock headlights have provided most motorists comfort in driving at night time, the increase of HID lights usage in the past few years is undeniable.

The fact that HID lights are motorists’ partners in road safety dispels the myth that surrounds it. It is more than a trendsetting motorcycle or automobile accessory. It is not just used as “pampapogi” to magnify the stature of our motorcycles or cars. It is more than ever, a great way to increase our awareness to road safety in an era where travelling on the night has become more and more of a commodity.

While there are many fears that HID lights are illegal in the Philippines, there are no existing state laws, decrees, memoranda or jurisprudence that will prohibit us from using HID. There may be local government ordinances that will ban the use of HID in certain extent. It means that there are limitations. Complete banning is unconstitutional unless a law that will regulate the use of HID lights will be passed. That is why usage of such should never be a cause to be apprehended by any traffic official.

But it doesn’t mean that no laws at this time regulates the usage of HID lights already gives us a license to abuse its usage. Remember that safety is never a one way road that will only serve your purpose. In being vigilant on the road, it is also our responsibility to care about other motorists.

Choosing HID lights that are too bright and glaring could cause temporary blindness due to burned and irritated retinas. Installing HID bulbs around 6000K – 8000k are more advisable. Choosing something brighter than these could result into a trouble not just to other motorists but also to you.

Another myth that HID lights dispel are the rumors that these can cause melting of headlight lenses or wiring system and can easily discharge a battery (most especially on motorcycles). This is true in cases where the installation of HID is improper. It is better to consult a real HID lights expert before installing one in your car or motorcycle.

Time and again, we are reminded on how road accidents can turn into a once in a lifetime tragedy which could turn into survival, or death. In the course of these tragedies are families seeking relief from toothless laws that could never defang the validity of the latest statistics showing significant numbers of deaths caused by road accidents.

But your road safety doesn’t just depend on the usage of HID lights. Extreme vigilance, in the face of an unpredictable road should be enforced by every motorist while driving.
